 DESCRIPTION
spacer
The temples were known to have been built in ancient Bengal under patronage of several powerful Hindu and Buddhist rulers from an early age. Descriptions of some of their grandeur and magnificence are available through several epigraphically and other records very little of which still exist. Through existence of very limited surviving architectural examples, mostly built between sixteenth to nineteenth centuries, temple architecture of Bengal forms one of the most distinctive groups among the sacred buildings in India.
