 DESCRIPTION
spacer
The collection of articles read at a conference are concerned with Tibetan and Sikkim studies--a nascent field of study. Experts in these fields focus on them as unbounded worlds influenced by and influencing neighbouring cultures and lands. They take up aspects of early Buddhist art development, the Dzonkpha language, Bhutanese death rituals and related practices, and the harvest festival in northern Bhutan. They study political aspects like implications of changes in people's perspectives during the recent transition to democracy in Bhutan, the state formation of Sikkim and the rise of a national historical narrative, and Nepal-Sikkim relations. With reference to specific communities and examining texts on the Buddha's life, they also study some rarely-examined themes like Themes like use of Buddhist and Shamanic drums in Sikkim and Nepal.
