Mountain exploration with de Filippi in 1913-14 and on his own expedition in 1930 into Ladakh and the Karakoram. From a diary kept of a one-man expedition to Western Tibet. The geologist Giotto Dainelli (1878-1968) wanted to explore while beholden to no one-to travel as he pleased and free to make botanical and archeological discoveries at will. His hope is that the reader of his book ‘may catch a glimpse of the grand and majestic beauty of the country and of the fine and essentially artistic intelligence of its inhabitants.’ Explorations in Western Tibet, from Kashmir to Leh, the Shyok Valley, across the Siachen Glacier and back.
