DESCRIPTION
This study of scheduled caste government employees of Delhi sheds light, first, on the social constraints in their educational advancement and occupational mobility and second, on the processes in moving up the social hierarchy and the consequences thereof. Based on in-depth interviews with a cross-section of the employment segment of scheduled caste white-collar and low middle class, the book provides a sensitive account of their struggle for social position and for freedom from stigma, injustice and discrimination. Despite the tangible gains and improvements in the social conditions and status of the scheduled caste, the book candidly acknowledges the limits to what and how much can be achieved through policies of protective discrimination. The scheduled castes continue to suffer from a series of old and new deprivations and discrimination, invisible to and unperceived by the general people. The conclusions drawn suggest the need for rethinking policy implementation and for continued political engagement with issues to equality and justice for the scheduled castes.
