 DESCRIPTION
spacer
The history of collecting on the subcontinent began with the contribution of the Buddhist and Jain communities, followed by the example of the Hindu temples, with metal images and jewellery, and building libraries. The Muslim rulers also injected a new energy in book collecting which reached an extraordinary intensity under the Great Mughals, for whose obsessions there is plenty of evidence. A different type of collector developed with the arrival of the Europeans. During the colonial period (18th-19th centuries) there was both plunder and loot but also genuine antiquarian curiosity. The foundation of the government Archaeological Department in the mid-19th century and museums as well as the rise of nationalism encouraged educated Indians to collect in the modern sense.
