 DESCRIPTION

Tribals of Orissa are marginal farmers who besides tilling the soil and domesticating livestock depend on forest products for their sustenance. They are loyal and peace loving people with low level of aspirations. The British Government policy was carefully formulated to deal with the aboriginal and sensitive tribal communities. In Mayurbhanj, an erstwhile feudatory State of Orissa with sixty two tribal groups, the experience was slightly different. Notwithstanding the welfare administration and cautious handling of the sensitive tribals, political disturbance cropped up at intervals for various socio-economic reasons which had to be tactfully dealt with by the local Chiefs through whom the British Government ran the show. Simultenous to the Congress movement, the peasants were organized as Prajamandals to spearhead the popular struggle till 1947 when the Chief handed over power to the Prajamandal leaders. The author brings under focus the tribal peasants uprising with great sympathy and understanding in the present book giving great insight to the troublesome period of Indian history.
