 DESCRIPTION

Power Electronics forms an important part of industrial electronics and is concerned with the application of power semiconductor devices for the control and efficient conversion of electric power. Power electronics is being used in a variety of low and high power products. At the lower end it is used in power supplies, UPS systems, battery chargers, servo motor control, stepper motor control, amplifiers etc. At the high power end, it is being used in heat and light control, DC and AC motor control, electric vehicle propulsion systems, and HVDC systems. 

The control devices prior to 1957 included thyristors, mercury arc rectifiers, ignitrons and similar devices. With the advent of Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR or Thyristor) in 1957, thyristors dominated as the power devices till the mid '70s. With advances in silicon technology, devices like power transistors, power MOSFETs, and Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) came on the scene. These devices have enabled high frequency and high power operation, thus paving the way for the development of efficient power electronic products that have a high power to volume ratio along with improved performance. 

At present, many of the undergraduate programs in Electrical and Electronic Engineering include one or two courses in power electronics. Most of the first-level courses are designed around the power semiconductor switches and topologies of power converters. This book proposes a more complete and integrated treatment that includes (a) analysis and design of converters, (b) system modeling and controller design with both the classical and state space methods and (c) reliability modeling and prediction and their integration into the overall system design. The topics of power electronics today are so vast that all topics cannot be covered in a single course at the undergraduate level.

A basic course in power electronics should at least be concerned with power semiconductor switches, rectifiers, controlled rectifiers, magnetics, DC-to-DC switch-mode converters, inverters, linear and switched-mode power supplies and some typical applications. The advanced or second level course can address the control design aspects, optimal and robust control, thermal and reliability design aspects. It is necessary to see that the students understand the concepts thoroughly, conduct a few experiments and possibly a mini project to enable the student to acquire a fair level of confidence and competence in the subject. There is considerable emphasis on design, without sacrificing the necessary understanding of the underlying physical principles or the circuit analysis aspects.
