The perspective of SAARC has undergone some changes since it was launched. The living and developing organisation SAARC has entered its third decade. Over the past two decades its speed of progress and achievements were very slow, but its existence has certainly provided an opportunity for the policy-makers, administrators, and experts to meet regularly and hold informal dialogues on important bilateral and regional issues. Afghanistan is a mosaic of ethnic groups, and a crossroads between the East and the West. It has been an ancient focal-point of trade and migration. The region of modern Afghanistan has seen many invaders and conquerors come and go, including the Persian Empire, Alexander the Great, Muslim Arabs, Turkic and Mongol nomads, the British Empire and the soviets. Afghanistan was accepted as the eighth member of SAARC on November 13, 2005. This book throws ample light on Afghanistan as the eighth member of SAARC. SAARC initiative was launched by Bangladesh at the behest of late President Ziaur Rahman in 1980. After some initial hiccups, some hesitations and muted reservations, all seven nations of South Asia tuned in to launch the new regional forum. Now it has entered its third decade with new hopes and challenges. This book has thirteen chapters and studies Bangladesh's initiation, participation and payoff in relation to South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Bangladesh has the strong role in the initiation and establishment of SAARC. It has served in the chairmanship of SAARC and has participated in a wide range of ongoing SAARC regional activities. As of now three SAARC summits have been held in the country. It brought new inspiration and joy for the whole nation and the image of Bangladesh was enhanced in the international arena. The book discusses the role of Bangladesh in SAARC elaborately. An attempt has been made to include all the relevant information about the subject. It will definitely prove useful and helpful for researchers, scholars, students alike. Suggestions from readers are gratefully acknowledged by the undersigned. This extremely informative and exhaustive book will be valuable to all those who are interested in the subject. SAARC has also assumed a new dimension through its interaction and cooperation with other regional and international organizations. Joining SAARC was politically significant for a small nation-state like Bhutan. The country, situated between two giant neighbours, has firmly supported SAARC activities. For Bhutan, the association would be a mechanism through which it could expand its foreign relations with other countries without antagonizing India. The book Bhutan and SAARC has fifteen chapters and discusses the significant role of Bhutan in SAARC. Bhutan attaches great importance to SAARC. Ever since the inception of SAARC, Bhutan has firmly supported and promoted the activities, and worked towards making the South Asian region self-reliant. Consistent with its policy of developing friendly relations with all the neighbouring countries, SAARC fulfils an important foreign policy objective of Bhutan. It has also displayed a keen interest in economic cooperation and various peacemaking efforts in South Asia. This book throws ample lights on the role of Bhutan in SAARC. Efforts have been made to cover relevant information about the subject. It would be helpful to those who like the subject. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established in 1985 by seven countries. Afghanistan became a new member of SAARC in thirteenth SAARC Summit on thirteenth November, 2005. India has been actively participating in all the SAARC activities. The work also has its own feature and characteristics. It discusses political situation of the region including critical issues as geopolitics, regional cooperation, security challenges, terrorism and trends in politicization. The South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is an eight-member grouping of countries that together have more than 1.3 billion people; this represents 22 per cent of the world's population. The land of islands Maldives is a founder and active member of SAARC. It plays important role in this living organization. This book discusses about the Maldives in the context of SAARC. Maldives follows a non-aligned policy and is committed to maintaining friendly relations with all South Asian countries. The role of the Maldives in SAARC is not less than any other member countries. The book throws lights on the role of the Maldives in SAARC. It includes all the relevant information about the subject. SAARC has come a long way since its foundation in 1985. Despite its slow pace, it has achieved significant cooperation in a number of areas. As a young and developing association, it has been successful in creating a wide network of institutions, individuals and professional associations in the region through various activities and programs. The book narrates Nepal as a founding member and active player in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation. This extremely informative and exhaustive book will be valuable to all those who are interested in the subject like international studies. SAARC's very existence, modest achievements, cautious and gradual approach for achieving the objectives, represent a significant departure from a competitive to a cooperative strategy providing the necessary foundation for the emergence of a new orientation based on the realities of regional cooperation. By using a 'cooperative security' framework, SAARC can help facilitate greater economic and socio-cultural cooperation and alleviate the imminent security concerns within South Asia. The main aim of the book is to discuss Pakistan's role in SAARC. It has been a painstaking exercise to shape this work in its present form. All the aspects had to be taken into account regarding the subject. A predominantly Buddhist Island nation in South Asia and enjoying a stable period of democracy and economic progress, Sri Lanka has been torn by a bloody civil war between the Singhalese-dominated government and Tamil separatists led by the LTTE who demand an independent Tamil state in Northeastern Sri Lanka. From Sri Lanka people's perspective, one are a where the failure of SAARC as a regional body of cooperation has been felt quite acutely is the ethnic conflict. The present negotiation process has been facilitated by Norway. This book Sri Lanka and SAARC provides a thorough understanding about Sri Lanka`s role in SAARC. It will be useful to those who like the subject.
