DESCRIPTION
Drawing on the early Pali texts as well as later Sanskrit legends, the author compares the historical evidence of the Buddha’s life to the incremental growth of legend and myth that became attached to the concept of "the Buddha". In the process we are given not only as good a chronological history of the Buddha's life as can be constructed, but also a history of the early scholarship in this field.
