 DESCRIPTION

"HIV/AIDS is one of the most dreaded disease of our century. The epidemic is unique in its devastating impact on the social, economic and demographic underpinnings of development. South Asia has 4.2 million people living with HIV/AIDS, equivalent to a prevalence rate below 1 per cent of the adult population. However, the relatively low prevalence disguises the presence of high risk factors which continues to make HIV/AIDS as significant challenge to development. "HIV infection has taken root in South Asia, and poses a threat to development and poverty alleviation efforts in the region. Unless actions are now taken to scale up the response to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS, it could lead to significant economic and social consequences for all sectors. "International community as well as national governments have already took well-planned strategies and programmes, aiming to combat the pandemic from the face to earth. Within the framework of UNAIDS, World Health Organisation (WHO) plays a leading role in the health sector response to HIV/AIDS. "It is hoped that this book will contribute to a better understanding of the epidemic in the South Asia region and that governments, NGOs, policy-makers, anti-AIDS units and social workers will use the information it contains to guide them in better responding to the HIV/AIDS epidemic."
