However "Himalayan Environment: Issues and Concerns of Conservation and Development", an intellectually bold adventurous transect across many mountain disciplines by eminent Himalayan experts, is an exception. It will be read from cover to cover by Himalayan enthusiasts in India and all over the mountain-fraternity across the globe. Even non-mountaineers and the sedentary, the younger generation and the casual tourist, will find its typically adventurous versatile sweep an exciting experience and treasured shelf-reminder of the Himalaya. Even the IMF-INHIMEP APC Report becomes readable because of the original, 'bench-mark' Papers presented at the Indian Mountaineering Foundation's 1st Action projects conference in 1995. The insightful chapters on Himalayan Bio-diversity in National Parks; search Rescue and Evacuation in High Mountains; and field Notes on Wildlife, and others, are gripping eye-openers. These include notes on the Kashmir Stag, Musk Deer and the mountain goats, The Snow Leopard and its prey and a 'ground breaking' insight by Indian Himalayan wildlife experts, on the impact of Helicopters on Wildlife in the valley of the Beas, and Human Conflict in the Himalaya, are priceless additions to our understanding of the Himalaya. Edited by the veteran mountaineer, schoolmaster, former sportsman now turned wild-life-conservationist in 1956, and environmental-scientist Editor of the pioneering International Journal of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT before the Rio UNCED Earth Summit, Hari Dang, Padma Shri, this is a book which will be read, quoted and treasured as reference. The historic human traditions, and economic, cultural, social, political geographical and climatic destiny of the multi-national sub-continent of India depends upon the ecological health of the mountains, forests, glaciers, ice-cover and hydrology of the Himalaya. Hari Dang and the Indian Mountaineering Foundation's Himalayan Environment Programme have produced this first stepping-stone for a serious consideration of conservation within a development paradigm, for evolving a multi-national policy framework for the Himalayan nations whose well-being is dependent on the complex arc of mountain ranges radiating from the Pamir plateau, which provide the seasonal climates and rainfall, and the perennial river-flows which nurture the agriculture and sustainable habitats of these nations. Enhanced by the integral involvement of adventurous 'legends' of the mountains, like Captain M S Kohli, the renowned Everester, Chairman HET, and former President, IMF; the late D.I.G. ITBP, Mr. Hukum Singh Pangtey, and the famous Everester Arjuna Awardee, Mr. HCS Rawat Padma Shri, & Major H P S Ahluwalia, Col Bull Kumar and Col B S Sandhu, to name only a few, all great Himalayan mountaineers have made the IMF and its environment programme one of the nationally successful achievements of integrity since Independence, and this book is one result of this tradition. The Book is a compendium of some specially commissioned Papers and articles, but has been purposely compiled around the Report of the IMF-International Himalayan Environment Programme & the First Action Projects Conference held at the IMF in February, 1995 at New Delhi, and has been prepared, compiled and written by Hari Dang, Padma Shri, with the generous collaborative help and contributions and Papers of the eminent Himalayan scientists and development experts and mountaineers, who are the real authors, who have been individually acknowledged, and they are the real authors of this book. The IMF and the IMF-INHIMEP and APC, have an on-going programme in the Himalaya, and 40 % of the modest Royalties (2/5th of the 10 %) , as may accrue, being credited to the IMF Environment Account and the IMF-INHIMEP Account, while the rest ( 3/5th of the 10%) are being used through the IMF for defraying the secretarial and other expenditure which has caused the usual 'deficit' in such useful altruistic ventures and initiatives, which includes commissioned contributions from other sources.
